City of Ramsey Selects New Police Chief upon
Retirement of Chief Jim Way
After 30 years of
service with the Ramsey
Police Department, Police
Chief Jim Way is retiring.
Chief Way began working
for the City of Ramsey as
a patrol officer in January
1985. Since then, Way
has held many titles,
moving up the ranks to
Investigator, Corporal and
Sergeant. In 2002 he was
selected as Police Chief,
where he has continued to serve for the last 13 years.
Throughout his three decades of service, Chief Way has
led many accomplishments for the Ramsey PD, such as
instigating numerous technological advancements and
implementing the department's current fitness program.
Filling Way's shoes will be no easy task, but after an
extensive interview, the City of Ramsey proudly selected
Captain Jeff Katers to take over as the new Police Chief
on February 1, 2015. Katers started his career with the
Ramsey Police Department in 2000. He too began as a
patrol officer and has served in many different positions
within the department including Investigator, Investiga-
tions Sergeant, Support Services Sergeant, Administra-
tive Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain in July 2012, the
position he currently serves. Prior to his role at the City
of Ramsey, Katers worked as a Bailiff and Corrections
Officer for ten years.
Over the past few months, Chief Way and Captain
Katers have been working closely to transition Katers
into his new role. "Chief Way has been a great men-
tor and has helped me develop strengths and overcome
weaknesses," Katers states. In April 2014, Katers spent
ten weeks in Quantico, Virginia, learning from other
national and international law enforcement leaders at the
FBI National Academy. Chief Way is also a graduate of
the FBI National Academy and an advocate for law en-
forcement leadership. "This was a highlight of my career
development and Chief Way made it possible for me to
attend. I will use that knowledge and experience to lead
the Ramsey Police Department into the future;' says Kat-
ers.
As Police Chief,
Katers will oversee the
following department
personnel: 22 sworn
officers, a crime preven-
tion specialist, a commu-
nity service officer, four
administrative employees
and several volunteer
reserve officers and police
explorers. "Captain Kat-
ers will be a perfect fit for
the department," Chief
Way states.
As Way has done over the last 30 years, Katers will
continue to strive for advancement of the Ramsey Police
Department. "I believe in continual development and
creating operational efficiencies," Katers says. As Chief
of Police, Katers aims to introduce programs that will
further promote the City of Ramsey's reputation as a safe
community, as laws and technology continue to change.
While Way looks forward to spending time with his
family and friends in the months ahead, Katers is excited
to take on his new role as Ramsey Chief of Police. The
City of Ramsey, its residents and businesses, have been
fortunate to have Chief Way as a respectable leader and
protector for the past 30 years and are now privileged to
have Chief Katers leadership going forward.
