Councilmember Beahen introduced the following resolution and moved for its adoption: <br /> <br />RESOLUTION//98-02-017 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 25, 1998 AS "ARBOR DAY" AND THE <br />MONTH OF MAY 1998 AS "ARBOR MONTH" <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Minnesota's forest treasures were a bountiful resource to early settlers and <br />commerce because of their usefulness and their prominence in the landscape and ecosystem; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, trees are an increasingly vital resource in Minnesota today, enriching our <br />lives by purifying air and water, helping conserve soil and providing local energy, creating jobs <br />through a large forest products industry, serving as beautiful recreational settings, providing <br />habitat for wildlife of all kinds, making our cities more livable and our farms more productive, <br />and are related to all aspects of a diverse, healthy, sustainable ecosystem; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, human activities such as construction damage and pollution, as well as <br />disease and insects, threaten our trees, creating the need for concerted action to ensure the future <br />of urban and rural forests in our state, country and world by locally planting, engineering, <br />protecting and sponsoring trees for benefit of citizens, economy and ecology; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, each year, the last week in April - "Arbor Day" - and the month of May, the <br />people of Minnesota pay special attention to the wonderful treasure that our trees represent and <br />dedicate themselves to the continued health of our state's urban and rural forest ecosystems; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Ramsey has sponsored a tree sale for its residents for more than <br />two decades and is the area leader in community forestry issues; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world and the <br />City of Ramsey will be recognized in 1998 for the tenth year as a Tree City, USA. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />RAMSEY, ANOKA COUNTY, STATE OF MINNESOTA, as follows: <br /> <br />1) That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims April 25, 1998 as "Arbor Day". <br /> <br />2) That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims the month of May 1998 as "Arbor <br /> Month". <br /> <br />3) <br /> <br />That the Ramsey City Council urges all citizens to become more aware of the importance <br />of trees to their well-being, to participate in tree planting programs that will ensure a <br />green Ramsey in decades to come, and to plant, nurture, protect and steward the use of <br />Minnesota's treasure of tree resources. <br /> <br /> <br />
