RUM RIVER
CLEAN-UP COMPLETED

A pay phone, recliner, engine, toilet and canopy
were some of the most interesting finds hoisted from
the Rum River April 22 by volunteers in the "Adopt-
A-River" Project. Twenty-six miles of river were
cleaned and planted by canoe or by land. Volunteers
stabbed or planted over 1 0,000 willow and dogwood
into the banks, seeded 300 pounds of ground cover,
and planted 300 day lilies. At the end of the day on
Saturday, 2 tons of debris were deposited into
dumpsters.
"I was concerned that the early morning rain
would scare people away," said Anoka County Com-
missioner Natalie Haas Steffen, project coordinator.
"But we had an excellent turnout of 150-200 peo-
ple who worked extremely hard," she explained. "It
was a rewarding and fun day for all of us."
Volunteers were dispatched to predetermined
work sites from four starting points on the river. At
the Landscape Center behind the Anoka Senior High
School, site supervisors Jim Gromberg from the Ci-
ty of Ramsey and Carolyn Smith from Anoka Coun-
ty, met with volunteers from Lutheran Brotherhood
and youth groups, Anoka Lions, Anoka Rotary, Cub
Scout Troop #609, Anoka County Corrections, Sons
of Norway, Lamplighters 4-H Club, Association of
Recycling Managers (ARM), Anoka High School and
others.
Other site supervisors along the river were Pat
Rudolph and Debbie Petersen from Anoka County
Soil and Water Conservation District, and Tom Lar-
son from District 15 Community Education. They
worked with volunteers from St. Francis Schools,
Boy Scout Troop #511, Mayor Jim Lucus and others.
Individuals who handled the river by canoe were: Ed
and Ted Treska, former State Representative Dar-
by Nelson, Jerry Vitzthum, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce
Browning, Ramsey Mayor Gary Reiman, Jim Purvey,
Robert Peterson, Dick DeLong and Virginia
Newcomb. Other individuals working on the banks
were Barb Anderson, Mike Smith, Glen Larson, Bon-
nie Thomas, Wendy Anderson, Gary Sequin, and
Sue Pearson. Families were involved too such as
Cindy and Stephanie Gates; Kathy, Jennifer and Lisa
Smith; John, Carol and Scott Wrableuski; Tom,
Barb, Kelsey and Jamie Larson; and Sue, Sadie and
Earl Ayshford.
The site supervisors equipped the volunteers with
biodegradable garbage bags furnished by the MN
Corn Growers Association and the Minnesota
Department of Natural Resources. By the end of the
day 1,500 bags were filled with garbage. Volunteers
also received bottled sparkling water donated by
Grosslein Beverage. Seed was donated by
Braastads Nursery, Morton Nursery, and Anoka In-
dependent Feed and Grain. Day lilies and seedlings
were donated by Lyle Bradley and Chet Tollefson
who had assistance preparing the material from Roy
Newcomb, Larry Koshak and others. Transportation
was provided by volunteer drivers Jack McMillan and
Lyle Bradley using buses donated by Hunts Bus
Company.
Volunteers from the Anoka County Sheriff's
Reserve and the St. Francis Police patrolled the river
by boat to ensure safety for the workers.
Lunch was served at the St. Francis High School
by volunteers from the Anoka Senior Citizen Club.
Food for the meal was donated by Land '0 Lakes,
St. Francis Jack and Jill, Andover Festival Foods,
Barrel '0 Fun, and Cub Foods.
Cash donations for the project came from the
Anoka Lions, Anoka Rotary, Green Realty, Inc., Oak
Grove Lions, Ramsey Lions, St. Francis Legion and
St. Francis Lions. Garbage disposal services were
provided by Waste Management of Minnesota, Inc.
Work on the Rum River will be ongoing. The Nor-
theast YMCA and Corrections Department will be
coming out when the water level drops to tackle a
site on the river that has hundreds of tires.

POSTAL CUSTOMER

"I'm very thankful to the project organizers,
volunteers and donators for their contributions to
clean up and preserve one of Anoka County's most
valuable resources," Commissioner Haas Steffen
said. "This project has been a great example of what
team work can accomplish."
RAMSEY CLEAN-UP A
SMASHING SUCCESS

During the month of April, the Make the Scene,
Keep Ramsey Clean Committee collected over 39
tons of tires, 14 tons of appliances, and two tons of
batteries to make Clean-up Month a huge success.
On May 6th, Ramsey Clean-up Day, the residents
of Ramsey came to the landfill in record numbers.
The residents brought in an additional 30 tons of
tires, two tons of batteries, and a large quantity of
major appliances. Unfortunately this huge turn out
was unforeseen by the planning committee and
caused some problems on Clean-up Day. The plan-
ning staff is looking at ways of making next year's
Clean-up Day more successful. If you have any ideas
on how this may be accomplished, please write to:
