NOVEMBER 1991, VOLUME 6, NO. 11

CITY MEETS CHALLENGE OF
MEGASTORM

Merle Mevissen, Public Works Supervisor and 19 year veteran of fighting snow
in Ramsey, directed his 6 man Public Works Department and 5 additional part-
time employees in clearing the City streets from the first snow of the season. The
storm will be remembered as the great Halloween storm of 1991, or which some
are calling "the storm of the century". The removal operation began well before
dawn on Friday morning and was concluded on Saturday evening at 9:00 p.m.
when the last of Ramsey's 113 miles of streets were plowed open. The operation
required 28 hours of effort in a time span of less than 2 days. The City snow
removal fleet includes 4 large two-ton trucks, 2 motor graders, a front-end loader
and 2 smaller one-ton trucks for clearing snow out of 150 city cul-de-sacs. During
the entire operation, only one piece of equipment needed to be taken out of
service for repairs. For snow storms of this magnitude, the equipment held up
remarkably well according to Mevissen. He credits the low equipment break-
down to the City's commitment to replacing critical
equipment on a timely basis.
For most plowing operations, Mevissen

indicated that his goal is
to complete the operation within 8 hours.
Usually, this means crews start the plowing operation between midnight and 2:00
a.m., so that most streets are plowed in time for the peak morning travel period.
Plowing cul-de-sacs and sanding intersections, hills and curves completes the
operation. Hopefully, the City will never experience another storm of this
magnitude. However, if it happens again, Merle and his crew will be ready for it.

MEALS ON WHEELS

If you want to stay in your own
home.. .
Everyday in Hennepin-Anoka
Counties, Meals on Wheels delivers
hot meals to homebound persons
unable to prepare meals for
themselves.
