MIDYEAR HOMESTEAD

Residents who own and occupy their property
after January 2, 1987, and prior to June 1, 1987,
qualify for the mid-year homestead credit. Property
owners must file for the mid-year homestead credit
as soon as possible. The credit filed in June affects
taxes due in 1988 and could mean substantial dif-
ference in your property taxes. Ramsey residents
must file for mid-year homestead credit at the Anoka
County Assessors Office in the Anoka County Cour-
thouse at 325 East Main in Anoka.
PARK COMMISSION REVIEWS
SURVEY RESULTS

The Ramsey Park and Recreation Commission
would like to thank those residents that took the time
to respond to the park and recreation survey includ-
ed in the March issue of this newsletter. Following
are the results of that survey.
The City received 50 responses to the survey. Of
those 50, 36 lived near a park and only 9 were satisif-
ed with the facility nearest them. The most common
reasons for dissatisfaction were that the parks are
either undeveloped or in need of additional im-
provements and maintenance.
Of the 50 responses, 32 were not satisfied with
Ramsey's park system in general because they feel
the facilities are inadequate or they're just not aware
of where the parks are.
According to the responses, the following are the
most desired improvements to Ramsey's park
system: trail system, tennis courts, skating rinks,
community center, additional athletic fields and
hockey rinks. There was a lot of interest expressed
in trails for biking, hiking, cross country skiing,
horseback riding and snowmobling.
The Park Commission is evaluating the results of
the survey and will use this information to plan for
future park facilities and development. Thanks again
for your responses. You also might be interested in
LIONS' COMMUNITY PICNIC

WAS A ROARING SUCCESS!

June 14th was the day of the big Ramsey Com-
munity Picnic. All. indications are that it was a
tremendous success. The weather was beautiful
(and hot!) and many Ramsey residents turned out
to take part in the activities. It's estimated that over
2,000 people came to Central park to eat over 4,000
hot dogs and drink 5,000 cups of pop. Many door
prizes were awarded and 500 prizes were given to
kids in the game tent. Among the other activities
were: relay races, baby crawl, horseshoe tour-
naments and volleyball games. Bingo was active all
day in the bingo tent and many valuable prizes were
also given away. The dunk tank was a special at-
traction during most of the day with dignitaries such
as Mayor Gary Reimann and Councilman Arnie Cox
taking their turn on the precarious perch above the
water. The grand finale was a balloon lift and it was
a beautiful site; the crowd loved it.
The Ramsey Lions wish to extend a special thanks
to Kem King and Jill Prall of the Ramsey Youth
Athletic Association for their tireless efforts before
and during the picnic. Their work was a major fac-
tor in making the day the success that it was.
The Lions would also like to thank Claudia Dodge
of the Ramsey Community School and Oren Larson
of the Boy Scouts. The many others that also helped
included people from the Senior Citizen organiza-
tion, Lions' wives and families and many residents.
Thanks to all of you!
PARKS IN RAMSEY

Since the days before Ramsey was a city, park
lands have been dedicated for public use throughout
our community. Park land is acquired during the plat-
ting process, purchased or received as a gift. When
large parcels of land are subdivided, it is common
for the city to require that a portion of that subdivi-
sion be dedicated for park purposes. Recently, it has
been the policy of the City of Ramsey to only accept
land that is suitable for park development and that
if such suitable land is not available, a park and
recreation fee is charged to the person developing
land in lieu of a park land dedication.
Since Ramsey is a relatively new city, many of the
parks within our community have yet to be
developed into "active use parks" and some parks
such as wetlands, will continue to be available for
a much more passive use. Currently, the City of
Ramsey is attempting to develop Central Park, Tit-
terud Park and River's Bend Park into more fully
developed active use facilities. Older communities
may have extensive park systems to show for the
years of park development and investment while
Ramsey has just begun. We hope that in the near
future, each Ramsey resident can look to their com-
munity and, say that parks are provided and main-
tained at an appropriate level to encourage that com-
munity pride that means so much to our hometown.
We believe the enclosed map depicting Ramsey
parks portrays the potential of a first class communi-
ty park system with a blend ot trails, wetlands, ac-
tive and passive parks responding to the variety of
needs of the residents of Ramsey.

INTERESTED IN A VOLUNTEER

FIRE DEPARTMENT?

In an effort to develop a fire safety plan for the Ci-
ty of Ramsey, it is essential for us to determine the
number and availability of persons, male and female,
ages 18 to 35, who would be interested in serving
on a volunteer fire fighting force.
If you have such an interest, please contact Pen-
ny Curtis at Ramsey City Hall (427-1410) or you may
call Steve Suess (753-3534), Fire Safety Committee
Secretary.
Your expression of interest will not be considered
as an application to serve, but rather as an impor-
tant piece of information in helping us to make our
recommendations.
