LANDFILL UPDATE

Back in 1989 the Ramsey City Council approved
a conditional use permit to Waste Management of
Minnesota, Inc allowing for a vertical expansion of the
Anoka Regional Sanitary Landfill. This permit expires
December 31, 1993. Over the past year and one-half
Waste Management, Inc. and the Ramsey City
Council have been negotiating issues relating to the
closure of the 'landfill. It is currently Waste
Management, Inc.'s estimate that ~ will stop receiving
waste products for disposal at the landfill on or before
October 13, 1993.
Waste Management, Inc. recently initiated some of
these closure activities by regrading of the landfill and
installing new gas extraction piping on the north and
west slopes of the landfill. The regrading work in this
area is scheduled for completion by May 21, 1993.
This will be followed by installation of the top cover,
liner, drainage cover and top soil. The top cover
installation is to begin between May 15 and June 1,
1993. It is to be completed on or about September 15,
1993, and will be followed by seeding yet this year.
Additional closure activities will occur, however,
during 1994. During 1994, a gas extraction system will
be installed concurrent with regrading of the south
slope of the landfill. This work will be scheduled
similarly to the 1993 project. Any neighborhood impact
of either the 1993 or 1994 projects should be limited to
a two to three week period in May. If residents have
any questions regarding these activities, they should
contact Waste Management at 421-0540.
DONIT PRUNE OAKS
IN MAY OR JUNE!!

Trimming oaks in Mayor June can be hazardous
to your oak trees! Fresh cuts, resulting in open
wounds, attract sap-feeding insects that can carry the
oak wilt fungus which infects healthy oak trees.
Wounding can be caused from pruning, lawn mowers,
weed whips, construction equipment, and various
other methods. If your oaks are wounded
accidentally during this critical time in Mayor June,
apply a pruning paint immediately. For additional
information concerning oak wilt, call the Anoka
County Extension Office at 755-1280.
