TOYS FOR JOY FUNDRAlSER

Fifth grade students at Ramsey Elementary School got a taste of planning and
nating a mini business, marketing and advertising, and then distributing the profits
-......) result of a fundraiser they conducted to raise money for Toys for Joy.
When Tom Cloutier came up with the idea of a used toy sale, the other teachers on
his team, Jill Todd, Deborah Erlien, Kim Wobbe and Nancy Dubois, presented it to their
students. It generated a lot of enthusiasm. For two weeks students sorted through
their old toys, books and games at home and selected those they no longer use to
bring to the sale. Then they wrote commercials, created posters, priced their items and
set up shop.
The entire student body brought their nickels, dimes and dollars to purchase toys at
the two-day sale. "The students did the cashiering and selling. They got a lot of
practice in counting out change," said Cloutier. "It was a great experience for them."
Once they had the money, they had to decide how to distribute it. "That was kind
of controversial. In fact, they are voting to see if it should go for toys or for food," said
Cloutier. "Some of the students felt that if you give needy children a toy, but they are
still hungry, maybe the toy is not so important." Teachers agreed that one of the
biggest benefits of the sale was the feeling of pride students got when they counted up
their profits and knew that the money was going to help children like themselves.
Ramsey Elementary School fifth graders felt a lot of pride after raising $283 to help
make the holidays happier for children like themselves.
