The May 3, 1997 bike road-eo will reduce
the risk of accidents by building an awareness of the importance of bicycle safety.
The bike road-eo is a memorial to Becky Weiss, a happy, healthy nine-
year-old with an infectious smile, who died August 8, 1989 after being struck by
a car while riding her bike near her home. Becky's family and friends decided to
sponsor a bike safety event to help prevent another child from being severely
injured or killed, and to spare another family the incredible pain oflosing a child.
The road-eo is sponsored by the Weiss family and the Lions Club, Police
Department, Community Education, and Fire Department in Ramsey.
The Becky Weiss Memorial Bike Road-eo is a fun-filled, educational
day for families. Activities include an obstacle course, bike inspection, bike
safety movie, a lecture from a safety officer and many new attractions. Each
participating child will receive a road-eo T-shirt and lunch. Throughout the day
there will be door-prize drawings. To be eligible for prizes, children must
participate in all road-eo events and be present for the drawing.
This year children are encouraged to wear bicycle helmets. Participants
wearing helmets will receive tickets for a special drawing for a new bicycle.
Road-eo partipation has increased every year. Last year's attendance
was more than 380 children and this year's goal is to reach even more children and
teach them safe bicycle habits. The
program, which is patterned after one implemented in
Coon Rapids and other communities, allows City
residents to "adopt" one of the City's 200 fire hydrants.
Why would a fire hydrant need to be adopted?
Because hydrants that are buried in snow or obscured by
brush are difficult to locate in a fire emergency wh~n
every second counts. Hydrants that are vandalized or
frozen and not reported are useless to the Fire
Department.
Adopting a fire hydrant can be fun as well as
helpful. Program participants will have an opportUnity
to paint their hydrants and to receive a personalized
certificate of adoption. Individuals, families and groups
who want to learn more about the program or request an
application packet, are invited to contact:

Mr. Kenneth Peterson
Adopt-A-Hydrant Chairman
15153 Nowthen Blvd NW
Ramsey, MN 55303
or phone 427-1410
