many acres of mowing? And even
though we're primarily in one county
there's a large difference in snowfall
from one area to another, so how much
snowplowing are we doing?" says Dice.
"When we spit this information out we
discovered that some reservations were
not equally staffed according to work
demand. We shifted positions around as
another way to cope with demand. The
next step that we're about three-quarters
of the way from completing is a classifi-
cation distribution evaluation, which
will place the appropriate mix of hourly
classifications in each reservation."
In another case, Dice says, one
reservation had no highly technical
building maintenance needs (like
HVAC), but one person classified to do
this work. Another reservation had
eight buildings with HVAC needs and
only two HVAC people. These and oth& ~ases are being
addressed with classification distribution.
In similar fashion, Cleveland Metroparks is maxfmizing
its fleet and maintenance vehicles through focused invento-
ries plugged into a software management program. This

inventory, followed by the reallocation
of resources, has the added bonus of
freeing up the people who work the
machinery to do other things that were
needed, but perhaps not as high up on
the priority list.
Park operations used to have a fleet
of very large dump trucks that sat
around a lot because of their primary
and specialized use - like salting the
roads, hauling asphalt, snow removal or
the occasional large haul.
Demands and needs were evaluat-
ed, and less expensive, multi-use trucks
were acquired. Dice says the trucks are
built to handle 85 percent of the jobs,
while a smaller fleet of dump trucks
handles the other 15 percent.
"The easy way to do that is to look
at the speedometer and the hour meter.
If you see an eight-year-old truck with
26,000 miles on it that cost $50,000 you're thinking, 'What
could I have purchased with $50,000 that 1 would'ye put
more than 26,000 miles on?' And then, 'What would have I
not been able to do?'" says Dice. "Now the trucks they were
replaced with - much smaller dump trucks, pick-up trucks

ParkWorks can provide the answer with
the historical data related to all work
performed at the park.

ParkWorks SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS

Work Order Management
Preventive Maintenance Management
Park Equipment Management
Materials Management

Handheld Paperless Solutions (Palm OS)
Web Enabled Work Request Module
Over 300 Built-in Reports and Graphs
Park Asset Management
Personnel Management

Lawn Maintenance & Trash Scheduling
Project Management
Contract Management
Park Safety and Risk Management
Hazardous Materials Management
Bar Coding
Estimates, Forecasting, Budgeting
GASI~ 34/35 Compliant
Cross*plafformed with Mae and PC

TMASYSTEMS
The Power To Manage.
The Power To Succeed.

800.862.1130 (loll free} o.918.494.2890 (main) · www.lmasystems.com

Circle Reader Service/t702
porksandrecbu,i ........
