The second phase entailed collecting native white pine seeds from
the parent trees on site and propagating them in Anoka County's
greenhouse. Several hundred white pine trees were successfully
propagated in an effort to maintain the local genetics of the site,

The final phase included transplanting the white pine seedlings
into the understory of the forest, primarily in the gaps that were
created from thinning the red maple. Some direct seeding efforts
were also implemented by experimehting with various site
preparation and sowing methods.

Field work assis~nce was provided by the Minneso~ Conse~'ation Co~s.

This cooperative project was implemented by the Anoka County
Parks and Recreation Department and was partially funded by the
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation
Partners Program. In addition, some field work assistance was
provided by the Ninnesota Conservation Corps.

An A,ffM
Responds

The 8anfilI-Locke Center for lhe Arts inviles the public to view the
work of St. Cloud artist Bill Gorcica in November. As we all
struggle 1o respond to catastrophic events in past months, some
artists have lelt particularly bound to use their girts fo express
horror or sadness, asking questions or seeking answers through
their creative work. Gorcica, a faculty member of SI. Cloud
State University's Nt Department, has been exploring his own
inner emotional and psychological responses to current events
through experimental digital drawing. The results of this
experimental work will be on display from November 5 lhrough
November 23 al the Ad Center.

"1 don't claim to lully understand the images thal appear in
these works nor do I wish to," says the artist. "Even though the
works are my own creation, they have taken on an existence
al their own."

The drawings are a provocative combination of traditional art
forms and new medi(~. Using Adobe Photoshop and a Wacom
drawing tablet, the artist employs a pressure sensitive cordless
to "draw" the pictures. The work can then be transferred to
multimedia formats such as video and interactive new media,
demonstraling the flexibility' at the method. Relying heavily on
intuition, Gorcica attempts to balance aesthetic concerns with
intense emotion. The resulting pictures are intensely colored,
rendered in scratchy, often child-like fragments of recognizable
images---human races, a sky, a building, for example. Some of
the work on exhibit will be in the form of digital sculpture made
in much the same way as the drawings described above and
created as three-dimensional installation.

~e dra~n~ are a provocative combm~bon
o¢~adifional art [o~ and new media.

A receplion lot the artist will take place on :riday, November 8,
7:00 p.m. at BanlilI-Locke Center for the Arts in Fridley. The
public is welcome and encouraged to attend lhis free event.

BanfilI-Locke Center for the Arts located at 6666 East River
I~oad, in Fridley about 2 miles north of 694.
