Trees with Needlelike Leaves Grouped in Bundles of 2 to 5 (Pines) <br /> <br />RED PINE or Not,ray pine (?inu~ resinosa) <br />Large tree, 40'- 60' (I00') tail; symmetric, rounded <br />crown with stout, hocizontal branches spaced in annual <br />whorls along the trunk; trunk, buttressed when mature, <br />up to 36" diameten Leaves: Needlelike, 4"- 6" long, <br />2'per bundle, break cleanly when bent, dark green. <br />Twigs: Reddish-brown; buds, orangish-brown to <br />reddish-brown, with loose scales. Seed cone: 1%,"- 2"/4'' <br />long. scale tips unarmed, pa/rs usually stick out at right <br />angles from branch. Bark: Reddish-brown to gray. <br />flaky; becoming shallowly furrowed with thin, scaly <br />plates (resembling jigsaw puzzle pieces). Range: <br />Native. north-central and northeastern Minnesota; hardy <br />throughout. Remarks: Shade-intolerant; moderately <br />fast-growing; long-lived; Minnesota's state tree. <br />Important dmber tree naturally found on dry, highly <br />acidic, sandy soils, Commonly used in reforestation <br />projects and Christmas tree plantations. Leaves: Needlelike, <br />2V:" - 5" long. 5 per bundle, soft, flexible, bluish-green. <br />Twigs: Greenish-gray to orangish-brown; buds, reddish <br />or yellowish-brown, pointed tip. Seed cones: 4". 8" <br />long, flexible, resin-coated scale tips (white). <br />Bark: Greenish-gray, smooth; becoming grayish-brown <br />and deeply furrowed wi~ scaly ridges. Range: Native, <br />northern and eastern Minnesota; hardy to Zone 3a. <br />Remarks: Intermediate in shade tolerance; fast- <br />growing; long-tired. Once called the 'IVlonarch of the <br />North," eastern white pine is the largest coniferous tree <br />in Minnesota and was the most important timber species. <br />in the United States from about 1700 to 1920.
