explained that if Council wishes to prOceed further with consideration of this project, they <br />should direct Staff to initiate a public improvement project for the installation of the <br />sidewalk. He suggested that letters coUld be sent out to the residents explaining each of the <br />alternatives. <br /> <br />Councilmember Peterson felt that Altemative #1 would not work because only the fronting <br />properties would be assessed the cost. <br /> <br />Councilmember Zimmerman inquired if the projec, t could be paid for out of MSA funding. <br /> <br />Mr. Jank0wsld stated that anywhere from 0 percent to i00 percent of the project cost could <br />be MSA funded. <br /> <br />Councilmember Beyer felt that MSA funding would be better than assessing only the <br />fronting properties or if it were decided that it would 'be assessed, it should be assessed to <br />the entire area. <br /> <br />Councilmember Hardin inquired of Police Chief AUspt~s if he feels that sidewalks will <br />resolve the safety issue. . <br /> <br />Chief Auspos replied it will help keep pedestrians off the streets. Upon inquiry, Chief <br />Auspos replied there have been very few accidents in the area. <br /> <br />Councilmember Peterson inquired about the maintenance of the sidewalks. <br /> <br />Mr. Jankowski stated that Staff would expect the residents with fronting property to shovel <br />the sidewalk; however, that would leave some of the areas not shoveled and those areas <br />would have to be shoveled by City Staff. He added that some residents may be opposed to <br />sidewalks. <br /> <br />Councilmember Beyer suggested letting the residents decide what alternatives they want. <br />She added that she thought the Police Department was also supposed to be a part of this <br />discussion and assist with determining different alternatives. <br /> <br />Councilmember Peterson stated that was done at the last meeting. <br /> <br />Councilmember Beyer stated she was not present then and no one informed her of that. <br /> <br />Motion by Councilmember Peterson and seconded by Councilmember Hardin to direct <br />Staff to notify the residents, who signed the original petition, of the two alternatives <br />presented this evening and to set up an informational meeting with these residents. Include <br />the Police Chief and the Public Works Supervisor in this meeting. Notify Council of the <br />date of the meeting in case they are able to attend. Bring back the findings from this <br />meeting to a subsequent Council meeting. <br /> <br />Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gilbertson, Councilmembers Peterson, Hardin, Beyer <br />and Zimmerman.
