Summary for 1998-1999 Snow Removal Season <br />By: Grant Riemer, Public Works Supervisor <br /> <br />CASE # q <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br />The following is a general overview of the City of Ramsey's snow removal operation for <br />the 1998'i999 season. <br /> <br />Full Scal~/Operations <br /> <br />Full-scale operations occurred on the following dates: <br />December 21, 1998 <br />January 3,'~6, 8, 12, 13, 14,and 18 <br />February !0 (ice storm) <br />March 9 <br />Most of tl~ese snowfalls landed into the 2"- 4" accumulation range with the exception <br />being the gtorm on 3/9/99. This storm accumulation was in the 14"-16" range. There <br />were also iseveral dates where one or two trucks plowed our main roads before the full <br />crew camo on duty. In addition, we had one ice storm on February 10,1999, that required <br />sanding by our entire fleet. <br /> <br />Primary Routes <br /> <br />One of th~ goals of the Public Works Department is to keep what we consider, the <br />primary routes used by residents open at all times. These routes are selected for their <br />ability to ~et the greatest number of residents to a county, or state highway, as quickly as <br />possible, iIn 1999, we added additional routes in the Emerald Pond Park area. The <br />primary routes are plowed continuously in the event of heavy snowfall, and are plowed <br />before we; start full operations. After a plowing operation, or in the event of slippery <br />conditions, two trucks spread pure salt over these selected roadways in an attempt to keep <br />them as clear of snow and ice as possible. As a result of this policy, the majority of the <br />straight salt we use is spread on these routes. <br /> <br />Salt usageiwas almost identical to the 1997-1998 season. During that winter, we used <br />154 tons t6 spread on the roadways for ice control. This season looks like we will use 155 <br />tons for tl~is purpose. In addition to the pure salt we spread on the road, we also mix <br />approximately 150 tons of salt into our sand pile for use in ice control. <br /> <br />Out of the 1400 tons we ordered at the beginning of the season, we have 95 tons left over. <br />This excess salt is currently being stored over at the MnDOT station in Anoka, and will <br />remain as Carry-over inventory for our use next season. <br /> <br />\kRA_FS I\VOL l\usersUThieling\~,JO\COUNCIL&kROAD&BRBSummary for 1998-1999 snow <br />season.doc05~14~99 <br /> <br /> <br />
