Sand Usage

This winter we distributed approximately 1,400 tons of salt/sand during the maintenance
of the City roadways. ..,...~.

Labor costs

The cost for labor for this season breaks down as follows:
Full-time straight wages $12,661.86 Straight Hours
Full time overtime wages $4,296.17 Overtime Hours
Part-time wages $1,198.00 Straight Hours
Contract drivers' wages $4,300.00 Straight Hours

852.25
162.25
136.50
86.00

Total labor costs

$23,221.68

Weather Service

This was the first year the City contracted with a private weather service, and it was a
very successful partnership. They forecasted most of the storms accurately, and gave us
plenty of advance warning of weather systems moving into our area. The service
contacts us by fax during business hours, or will locate us by cell phone, or pager if we
were away from home and after hours. We also fax the forecast along to City Hall and
the Police Department to alert them of potential trouble.

This system allows more flexibility for the drivers and supervisors. With the help of the
weather service we are able to announce our start time for the next day, well in advance.
This allows the drivers to go home and get some sleep, rather than waiting for a call from
their supervisor after the ten o'clock weather report. They are also able to accurately
forecast the end of the storm. This allows us to adjust our start time according to the
snowfall projection.

Part-Time Driver~

This year we used four, part-time employees in our operation. In my opinion the part-
time drivers did very well. I had very few legitimate complaints on their work. They
were dependable, professional, and easy to work with.

Contract Help

This year we contracted with Kelly's Landscaping to plow cul-de-sacs in our sewer and
water area. With the exception of some minor mistakes by an untested driver in one
snowfall, they performed very well. They had some of our most challenging customers
on their route, and handled them professionally.

\kRA_FS 1 \VOL l\usersUThieling\~JO\COUNCIL&kROAD&BRIXSummary for 1998-1999 snow
season.doc05/14/99
