4 RESOLUTION ENDORSES STAR OF THE NORTH GAMES The Anoka County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution during the April 13th County Board meeting endorsing the 1993 Star of the North Summer Games which will host over 10,000 Minnesota athletes from June 25 - 27. This year marks the sixth anniversary of the Star of the North Games, Minnesota's largest annual amateur multi -sport event. The Olympic style competition provides an opportunity for people of all ages to compete in 30 different events, reflecting the diverse abilities of Minnesota athletes. The wide variety of athletic events offered for competition range from team sports like soccer, baseball, volleyball and wrestling, to individual sports like golf, karate, powerlifting and fencing. The games also include divisions for special and disabled athletes. "It takes many resources to host an event that welcomes so many athletes,' said Anoka County Commissioner Margaret Langfeld, who believes the events provide an opportunity to showcase the County's many athletic venues. 'Anoka County's 8,000 acres of park and recreation space, along with the many recreational facilities offered by the sponsor cities and communities, make this area the perfect place to host the games. "Coordinating efforts for an event of this size is a tremendous job,' continued Langfeld. The Star of the North Games have received generous support from many communities who will serve as host for the events - communities such as Anoka, Blaine, Coon Rapids, Centerville, Lexington, Lino Lakes, Spring Lake Park, Circle Pines, Fridley, Mounds View and New Brighton.' 'However, the reason for the recent County Board action was to urge residents and corporations to add their support through volunteering time, donating monetarily or making in -kind contributions,' said Langfeld. Because the competition is open to all ages and a wide variety of sports, expectations for a record crowd are high." Commissioner Langfeld commended further, 'In 1991 we had over 10,000 athletes compete and that number continues to rise every year. We hope that our support of the games will promote health and fitness as well as bring our communities closer together through the spirit of competition.' Registration for events is taking place now. Further information regarding the amateur athletic competition, volunteering or contributions is available by calling 785-5678. 1T RESIDENT'S SUGGESTIONS ON ROAD NAMES REQUESTED At an April 1, 1993, meeting of the Road and Bridge Committee, one topic of discussion was how to alleviate confusion associated with the names of two collector streets serving the City. Sunfish Lake Drive N.W. is a new east/west collector street which will eventually run from T.H. #47, south of 149th Avenue N.W. to County Road #116 near the Altron Company. Portions of this new street have been constructed in the new Wood Pond Hills and Sunny Ponds subdivisions located south of City Hall along County Road #5. Obviously the name Sunfish Lake Drive N.W. is very similar to Sunfish Lake Boulevard N.W. (C.R. /157) which is also a major thoroughfare in the City. (See bold lines on the map below to show the streets for renaming.) A second thoroughfare considered for renaming is 153rd/155th Avenues. Because of the importance of this roadway, it would be less confusing for it to have a single descriptive name. The Road and Bridge Committee felt it would be worthwhile to obtain citizen input in considering appropriate names for these two roadways. Possible names could be related to Ramsey's historic past, or to geographic or man-made features. The Road and Bridge Committee will be reviewing these suggestions and making a recommendation to the City Council in July. If new road names are selected, the City will need to hold a public hearing and pass an ordinance designating the change. Properties affected by an address change will be notified by letter.
