CASE # 2

MN Naturalists Program
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator

Background:

At a Council work session this month, City Staff presented information on the Minnesota Master
Naturalist program, which was developed jointly between the University of MN and the
Department of Natural Resources. The program provides an opportunity for people to become
familiar and/or enhance their knowledge on Minnesota's three biomes (prairies/grasslands,
deciduous forests, and coniferous forests). Staff is proposing that the City partner with the
University of MN in offering this program for interested residents. The proposed program was
well received by Council and City Staff will be preparing a case for Council action at the
December 11 meeting. Staff will present a portion of the power point presentation that was
offered at the work session.

Recommendation:

Staff believes that one of the many benefits of this program will be enhanced volunteerism in
terms of conservation efforts and education. The Board should begin to contemplate possible
volunteer opportunities that could be accomplished/created as a result of this program (Exhibit 1
is included as an example).

EPB Action

Based on discussion.

EPB: 12/3/07
