CASE #1
Background:
REPORT ON RIVERDALE SPEED STUDIES
AND REQUEST FOR STOP SIGN PLACEMENT AT
RIVERDALE DRIVE AND ALPACA STREET
By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer
A petition was received dated August 1, 2007 which was signed by nine residents of the
Alpaca Estates subdivision located south of Riverdale Drive requesting that Stop signs be
placed on the east and west legs of the intersection of Alpaca Street and Riverdale Drive.
This- case was discussed at the October Public Works Committee meeting at which staff
reviewed the accident history, traffic counts, and sight distances This intersection has had
no accidents within the past five years aizd relatively low traffic. Staff recorrunended sight
distance improvements on the northeast coiner which have since been made, but no
change to the existing signage at this intersection.
There was a particular conceal over the speed of traffic proceeding through this
intersection and staff was directed to review the speed limit postings within this area and
also directed to set out the speed trailer. This will want traffic of the concern with speed
in the area and will also provide some data on the vehicle speeds on Riverdale Drive.
A review of the speed limit postings show that 30 mph speed limit signs were posted on
Armstrong Boulevard and Alpaca Street south of Riverdale Drive. No speed limit signs
were in place on Riverdale Drive. Speed limit signs of 35 mph have now been placed
along Riverdale Drive at four locations between Llama and Alpaca Streets. This speed
limit is consistent with the limit posted on sections of Riverdale Drive farther to the east.
The-speed trailer was set approximately 150 feet west of Alpaca Street to display and
record the speeds of veliicles on Riverdale Drive for 14.5 hours on Friday, October 26tH
and 11 hours on Monday, October 29th. Attached to this case are the output reports
provided by the speed trailer. Below is a summary of the results obtained from these
speed surveys•
Friday
11/26(2007 Monday
11(29/2007
Duration -hours 8:45 am - 10:45 m 7:30 am - 6:00 m
Duration - Time 14.5 hrs 11 hrs
Total vehicles 344 401
Max s eed 53 m h 44 m h
85th Percentile S eed 32 m h 31 m h
No Vehicles > 40 m h 11 3.2% 4 1.0%
No Vehicles > 50 m h 6 1.7% 0
-180-
