Case # 6

Consider EDAM Membership Dues

By: Sean M. Sullivan, Economic Development Coordinator

Background:

The Economic Development Association of Minnesota (EDAM) is a good organization for
economic development professionals. This organization serves as a good network and provides a
beneficial educational component for City Staff. Last year the EDA decided to become a
member and added John Letourneau to the membership list along with the associated dues. The
utilization of the membership benefits by the EDA members was very minimal. Staff questions
the need for the EDA to have its own membership.

Observations:

EDAM has various Third Thursday Events and Conferences throughout the year. Staff tries to
attend these events when appropriate andutilizes the EDAM network when needed. There was
some interest by EDA Members to attend the Summer Conference or other events to get to know
some of the other cities and economic development professionals. Last year there was not much
participation in these events by EDA members. If the interest of the EDA is to send some of its
members to the Summer Conference they may do so without being members of EDAM. Staff is
looking for direction as to how the EDA would like to be associated with EDAM. The 2008
Membership form is attached.

Staff Recommendation: Authorize payment of membership dues for the Economic
Development Coordinator.

Funding Source: EDA Levy

EDA Action:

Motion to authorize payment of EDAM membership dues for the Economic Development
Coordinator.

EDA: 1.10.08

34
