Absent: City Administrator Schroeder. <br /> <br />Fire Chief C~ Yfin asked to review the Fire Department budget after Mr. Schroeder arrives. <br /> <br />Case #3: State and Federal Fire Codes <br /> <br />City Administzat~ Schroeder arrived. <br /> <br />Fire Chief Crriffin stated that he has done some research with regard to Fire inspections. <br />According t0~the~State, those required to be inspected are day cares, resorts, hotels, motels and <br />public scholarlY. Ite stated that the City Council will have to decide what businesses they want to <br />include in tl~ inspections. He stated citizens and business owners have called to inquire what they <br />have to do tJp :have mspecuons. He can g~ve them adv ce but ~hey have to contact the State for <br />anything els~,! H~ mentioned that the City of Apple Valley didn t do inspections until a month ago <br />when they l~ieed tt full time Fire Inspector and now they charge a fee to do the inspections. He <br />added that if~ the City had an inspector, it would be a source to obtain money back for training to do <br />the job. <br /> <br />City AdminJ~strat°r Schroeder arrived. <br /> <br />Councilme~ber Zimmerman inquired about communities sharing an inspector to which Mr. <br />Schroeder stated he would check into. <br /> <br />Boardmembcr KaPler expressed concern that the State does the initial day care inspections and then <br />no more are xcquixed unless the City does it. <br /> <br />Fire Chief Crriffin stated he would check with Anoka County to see what the County requires for <br />day care in&pections. He added he would like a Fire Fighter to accompany the inspector to <br />businesses, ~tC. so the Department would know where the hazards are within the buildings. <br /> <br />CouncilmeratX~r Peterson inquired of the cost to certify one of the Fire Fighters to be an inspector. <br /> <br />Fire Chief .(!tiffin estimated about $125 for Fire Inspection Level I but felt that the person would <br />have to attait~ at lgast a Level II and preferably a Level HI to be an inspector. <br /> <br />Boardmemher Kapler inquired if there is anyone employed by the City full time who could take on <br />this addition~al task. <br /> <br />Mr. Schroe~ler r~plied that the Building Official already works over 40 hours; therefore, the <br />inspector position would require at least another part-time person. <br /> <br />It was deter~rdned that the calls from citizens and businesses inquiring about inspections would be <br />referred to ttle~city Administrator. <br /> <br />The Fire BOard Will meet again on May 20, 1992 which will allow time to complete research on <br /> <br />this issue. <br /> <br />Fire Board/April 22, 1992 <br /> Page 2 of 4 <br /> <br /> <br />
