CASE # 1

2008 Arbor Day Event
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator

Background:

At the February EPB meeting, there was a discussion about the possibility of donating the March
monthly stipend toward the purchase of trees to be offered to the Park & Recreation Commission
for planting in one of the parks. If the Board chooses to 'do this, there would be a pool of $180
available to purchase trees.

Staff has discussed this idea and thought it would be a good opportunity to couple this generous
offering with an Arbor Day event. The Board's May meeting (May 5) is in close proximity to the
state's designated Arbor Day (last Friday in April) and occurs during Arbor Month (May).
Therefore, Staff would recommend that the Board's May meeting be held at a park location and
include a tree planting event. Riverdale Park, which is located south of Highway 10, is
scheduled for certain improvements this summer, including irrigation, and some new plantings in
this park would be much appreciated.

The purchase of the trees could be through the pre-order program associated with the Tree Sale
or through a local nursery. This, along with the type of root stock (bareroot, container, balled and
burlap), and of course species, will determine how many trees may be purchased.

Recommendation:

Staff is recommending that the May EPB meeting be held in Riverdale Park and include or focus
on a tree planting event. If the Board is amenable to this idea, please be prepared to discuss
purchasing options as outlined above.

EPB Action

Based on discussion.

EPB: 3/3/08
