MAYOR /COUNCIL AND STAFF EFFECTIVENESS <br />Executive Summary: Vision, Goals, Priorities, Action Items <br />February 1, 2, 2008 Council /Staff Retreat <br />Executive Summary <br />Council Staff Retreat February 1, 2, 2008 <br />Suggestions on how the Mayor and Council can be more effective: <br />1. Acknowledge majority vote - honor that staff will move in the direction of the majority vote. <br />2. Meeting management; eliminate duplicate discussions at work session and highlight at the <br />City Council meeting. <br />3 Council do homework before meeting (staff has responsibility to be prepared). Ask <br />questions /do research ahead of time. <br />4 Staff works for Council as a whole - direction needs to come from Kurt /Council as a whole, <br />not one council member. <br />5. Agenda development be done by majority of the Council <br />Suggestions on How Staff can be more effective: <br />1. Allow free exchange of ideas. <br />2. Encourage professional development & networking. <br />3. Include more information on website and keep it current. <br />4. Continue effective weekly updates. <br />5. Don't "sugar coat" information. Don't be "afraid to face the ugly truth ". Council to have <br />faith in judgment of staff. <br />6. Eliminate repetition in staff reports. <br />COUNCIL AND STAFF (TOGETHER) TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE <br />A. Trust that we are all working in the best interest of the citizens of Ramsey. <br />B. CaII staff prior to meetings for additional information or input on agenda cases so staff and <br />Council can be better prepared for action. <br />C. Constructive feedback about the information staff provides - is it enough or the right <br />information for them to use in decision - making? <br />D. Understand the effect of television on meetings - how to promote a positive image of the <br />City. <br />
