CASE # 1

2008 Arbor Day Event
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator

Background:

At the March EPB meeting, the Board unanimously passed a motion to donate the February and
March monthly stipends toward the purchase of trees for an Arbor Day planting. This results in a
pool of $360.00 for trees. As noted at the March meeting, the tree planting event would occur
during the Board's regular May meeting (Monday, May 5), which would be held at Riverdale
Park A memo regarding this event was prepared for Council and accompanies the Arbor Day
Proclamation and Observance resolution on the April 8 consent agenda (included as Exhibit 1).

Staff has researched species availability, size and pricing with a local nursery. Apple trees are
available both as bareroot and container grown. The size of the trees would be roughly 5/8 inch
caliper and six (6) feet in height. Pricing varies dependent on root stock; bareroot trees will be
approximately $25.00 apiece and container grown trees would be approximately $35.00 apiece.
Other fruit trees, such as cherry, plum, apricot and pear are also available and would range in
price from about $30.00 to $40.00 per tree, again dependent on root stock

Based on the per tree cost, there would be roughly $100 remaining, and thus, Staff also looked
into species availability and pricing for shade trees. Several varieties of oak, including bicolor,
bur, and northern pin, are available. They are only available as container grown stock and the
price per tree would be around $80.00.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends confirming the tree planting event details and to direct Staff to purchase the
trees and extend an invitation to the Parks & Recreation Commission to attend the tree planting
event.

EPB Action

Based on discussion.

EPB: 4/7/08
