<br />their parents bring them along to the center. He noted that with training, the kids are able to use <br />the machines on the floor, if they want or go to child care. He stated that many of the bigger kids <br />are not crazy about sitting in the child care center if they don't want to work out. He stated that <br />Flagship Fitness has created a Kids Club, which would be open to all ages up to 18 and has <br />cardio arcade type games. <br /> <br />Councilmembers Dehen, Jeffrey, Olson and Assistant City Administrator Nelson arrived at the <br />meeting. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that examples of cardio arcade games are Dance Dance Revolution and <br />Guitar Hero. He stated that Flagship Fitness is trying to partner with emerging metro <br />communities whose demographics have been missed by LifeTime or LA Fitness. He stated that <br />they are currently working with St. Michael, Cottage Grove and Blaine. He stated that they feel <br />that Ramsey fits well into the demographic that they are looking for. He reviewed some <br />examples of facilities by architects Ankeny Kell and some possible floor plan models. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig asked typically how many square feet this type of facility would be. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that typically they look at a 70,000 square foot facility, but that is not <br />including the community space. He stated that St. Michael is looking at 10,000 sq. ft. of <br />community space that can be used for banquets or meetings, but will be connected with the <br />fitness facility. <br /> <br />Councilmember Dehen asked about the public/private partnership in Champlin. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton explained that part of the deal in Champlin was the City would write down the <br />land, site improvements, contribution for water features in exchange for community space and <br />guaranteed rates that were not higher than the 7 county metro area community centers. He <br />stated that, at the time, Champlin had about 15,000 to 17,000 residents. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec asked if the first step was to conduct a community survey to assess what kinds of <br />things the residents would like to have in the community center. He stated that the City had done <br />a survey several years ago when there was a possibility of a joint venture with the surrounding <br />communities. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that most cities do a community wide survey as the first step. He stated that <br />the Champlin survey came back with an overwhelming response for a pool facility of some sort, <br />next was a community center and a skate park also scored high. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec stated that he has had people ask why an auditorium wasn't included in the <br />municipal center and stated that there may be things that people want that the City hasn't thought <br />of. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that an ice arena was also a big desire in Champlin. <br /> <br />City Council Work Session / March 25, 2008 <br />Page 2 of5 <br />
