<br />Mayor Gamec stated that he didn't think the City could support an ic~ arena because there isn't a <br />high school in the City. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig stated that he feels the Kids Club idea is a win/win situation and feels the <br />focus on making a place that the whole family can go is huge. He asked if the YMCA has a <br />program for the 12 year olds. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that the YMCA has tried to have some Community Ed type activities for that <br />age group but has not had much success. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig stated that he feels the Dance Dance Revolution idea is great because <br />there are a lot of kids in Ramsey and they can play that for hours. He asked if there had been any <br />thought to connecting a hotel facility to the community center. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that they have not had any communities approach them with that concept, <br />but,sees no reason why it wouldn't work. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig stated that many families, rather than take a full winter vacation, will go <br />spend a weekend at a local hotel with a water park facility. He stated that he sees this as a <br />destination opportunity. He noted that Lord of Life Church has also had success in putting in <br />gyms and they seem to always be full. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec stated that the youth basketball program has gotten huge and they have had some <br />difficulty in using the school facilities because of janitorial coverage issues. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec asked what the membership fee is in Champlin. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that a typical family membership with 2 adults and access to free child care <br />is $84/month. He stated that he just added his teenage daughters to the membership, which <br />increased the monthly fees to $112/month. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec asked what the typical costs are for a pool facility, community rooms and work <br />out facilities. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that in using the Shoreview Community Center as an example, to build that <br />same type of facility today would be about $15 million to $20 million. He stated that their <br />facility has run in the red every year, so the City does subsidize its operation. He noted that they <br />do not have a large workout facility. <br /> <br />Community Development Director Miller asked if Mr. Boynton had a feeling for the market in <br />this area and if he was only looking at Ramsey. <br /> <br />Mr. Boynton stated that they typically look at a circle 5 miles from the site, so this would draw <br />people from Andover, Elk River, parts of Anoka and Burns Township. <br /> <br />City Council Work Session / March 25, 2008 <br />Page 3 of5 <br />
