APPROVE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES <br /> <br />Motion by C-om,missioner Johnson and seconded by Commissioner Gookin to approve the <br />following park and Recreation Commission minutes: <br /> <br />1) Park and Recreation Commission regular meeting minutes dated April 9, 1992. <br /> <br />Motion card ~od. :Voting Yes: Chairperson Hetland, Commissioners Johnson, Gookin, Cook, <br />Florentius, ~all and Swokowski. Voting No: None. <br /> <br />COMMISSION BUSINESS <br /> <br />Case #1: presentation by Steve Kerr regarding Community Education <br /> Programs, Services, Participation and Enrollment <br /> <br />Mr. Steve KeW, Manager of District #11 Community Education Program, was present to provide <br />information: about the programs offered by Community Education and also to answer any <br />questions th~ Commission/Council may have with regard to the program and/or funding of it. He <br />stated there Were some funding changes in the last year with probably the most significant one <br />being the cutting of adult programs. <br /> <br />Harriet Lars0n, Community Education Coordinator for Ramsey, was present to inform the <br />Commission/Coup, cil about the classes being offered and how they have been received by the <br />residents. $1~e stated she has really experienced a "sense of community" in Ramsey and is <br />impressed w~th iill the volunteers available and willing to help. She stated the Community <br />Education ~ograiln is developing a pre-school program and the classes are filling fast. The athletic <br />classes fill quickly and there is also a rise in the enrollment of the craft classes. There has been <br />requests for ~fgirl:s basketball team. Ms. Larson added that she would like to get a student council <br />organized toit~lp ~letermine what activities the youth want. She also mentioned the idea of offering <br />science and ~ogr. aphy classes which would explore education in a fun way. She stated they are <br />considering !~er Start times for some classes so that children with working parents can also attend. <br />She was impressed with the students from Anoka High School helping out with some of the <br />basketball close8 and stated they have expressed a desire to help out with the basketball clinic. <br />She stated slh¢ "has a love for the success of children" and shared a photograph album full of <br />pictures of chi!dr0n participating in the different classes offered by the Program. <br /> <br />Mr. Kerr state, x:l the following is a list of what the Community Education Program expects of it's <br />coordinators: !1) Arrange community access to school facilities and communicate school policies <br />and proced~ires; 2) Provide services and programs for the audiences; 3) Be involved in <br />community wide issues; and 4) Be involved in what's happening in the school itself. <br /> <br />Chairperson Hetland inquired how community education relates to the Park and Recreation <br />Commissiori ~tnd how the Commission could be of service to the program. <br /> <br />Mr. Kerr state, d this presentation is more for an "awareness issue" as the City is paying for these <br />services. H~ stated the Commission could assist by helping to determine the needs and wants of <br />the commum~. He stated the program ~s always open to suggesnons and that they would would <br />provide what they could w~th regard to the requests and suggesnons. <br /> <br />MORE CITIZEN INPUT <br /> <br />Stanhope Tlm~acexesidents - They again expressed concem for the safety of their children because <br />of no park to l~la~ in. They mentioned there is approximately 18 acres deemed as City park land at <br />Roanoke Street I~.W. and 154th Lane N.W. They offered volunteer labor to help level the park <br /> <br />joint Park & Recreation Commission/City Council - June 11, 1992 <br /> Page 2 of 5 <br /> <br /> <br />
