MAYOR, COUNCIL AND STAFF INPUT
Ramsey Royalty
Mayor Gamec stated that he had been contacted by someone who would like to start a Ramsey
Royalty program. He stated that she stated that she would run it and work out all the financing.
Management Intern Gladhill asked if this would be in conjunction with Happy Days.
Mayor Gamec stated that he wasn't sure, but he did tell her that the City didn't have any money
to help support the program.
Business License Renewal
Councilmember Look stated that he had gotten a call from Service Team of Professionals that
was recently issued a citation because they neglected to renew their business license. He stated
that it costs $15 for a renewal and there seems to have been a mix up, in this case, because they
have a canceled check. He stated that his question is whether it makes sense for the City to take
someone to court over a $15 renewal fee.
Councilmember Elvig stated that he has a similar situation with a dentist, who didn't pay
attention to the paperwork sent that told her she needed to renew her license.. He stated that she
filed it away and she admits to not getting this renewed, but did not think it was a big deal. He
stated that she got a citation for a petty misdemeanor and is upset.
Community Development Director Miller stated that businesses get a few notices before the
citation is issued.
Councilmember Look stated that his point is that the City will spend a fair amount of money
trying to bring this to court for a $15 fee. He suggested that the City consider a 5 year renewal
because he thinks if the City tries to prosecute this, it will just lose money.
City Administrator Ulrich stated that staff will take a look at a multi -year renewal option.
Councilmember Dehen asked why the City required businesses to pay $15 for renewal.
City Administrator Ulrich stated that this is so the City has an accurate record of businesses in
town.
Mayor Gamec stated that it is also for cases where there is a fire or some kind of emergency, so
the City can contact the owner.
Councilmember Look stated that the City has annual inspections by the fire marshal and asked
why he couldn't also collect their $15 when he is on site. He suggested that perhaps the City
can just issue another fine if they are late with their renewal fee, rather than turning it into a legal
issue.
City Council Work Session / June 3, 2008
