Board Member Bentz stated that if they were to make butterfly gardens or attract hummingbirds
to the park, it would be something that the public would be able to participate in and go back to
visit.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson advised that those projects would fit in with the idea of
habitat restoration and could also be considered for a project. He stated that the best thing
tonight might be to get the discussion going and not. settle on anyone thing. He explained that
Chairperson McDilda had asked him to add this item to the agenda so that they could discuss
what could be done still this year or in future years by the EPB. He stated that they could keep
this item on the agenda for the meeting next month where they could continue the discussion
with full attendance.

Board Member Stodola stated that if the Board were to come up with an ongoing project to
participate in he would be more than willing to donate his monthly stipend towards the project.
He explained that he did not join the EPB for the monthly stipend and would be happy to donate
the money to a project.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson advised that was very generous and would always be an
option. .He stated that he would double check with someone in the Finance Department to make
sure that could continue to be done and was not just a one-time thing. He explained that
although the monthly stipend is not a lot of money, it does take time and gasoline for the Board
Members to get to the meetings every month. He stated that the last thing that he would want is
for any of the Board Members to feel pressured into giving up their monthly stipend for a
project. He advised that he does have a small amount of funding available for use on a
reasonable project. He stated that they could discuss donating the monthly stipends as a Board
but advised that the discussion would need to be revisited anytime a new Board Member joined
the EPB. He again advised that he would not want anyone to feel pressured to donate his or her
stipend, as there would be possible funding available through the City.

Acting Chairperson Sibilski questioned if there were any park lands that were not quite
developed that may be suitable for restoration.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson advised that there are parcels that are currently owned by
the City but that are not dedicated park land, one of them being about 20 or 30 acres in the Trott
Brook Corridor; He advised that he did not really know the status of that land but thought that it
could be looked at for restoration. He advised that there might be another area south of the
landfill that the DNR and the MPCA have been considering as an ideal location for an oak
savannah restoration project. He explained that land might be something that the City ultimately
acquires and then would be something that the Board could get in on, but advised that would be a
year or two down the road.

Acting Chairperson Sibilski thought something like that would be a good project for the Board to
get involved in, and suggested the area to the west of Alpine Park for restoration work. He
advised that they would need to do a prescribed burn in that area.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson advised that a prescribed burn would need authorization
from the Fire Chief. He stated that for habitat restoration, they would also need signage that
stated habitat restoration in process, explained the process, and included the plants that they were
working with in the project.
Environmental Policy Board / June 2, 2008
Page 7 of 10
