Commissioner Barr advised that there is still more development in that park area. to occur and
this is only the first step in the construction process. She did not think it was appropriate to make
generalized comments about children of that demographic, especially when you are not familiar
with that type of activity and what occurs.

Civil Engineer Linton advised that he has driven by the skate park near his home in Char;nplin
and has noticed that early Saturday and Sunday mornings it is usually a mom, reading her book,
and a nine year old using the skate park equipment. He advised that there is a range of kids of all
ages that use the skate parks.

Commissioner Shryock believed that once there is structured activity in that area the neighbors
would be happy with the addition of the skate park, as there would be something for the kids in
that area to do and more people around. She thought that they were currently having issues with
kids misbehaving in that area because there is nothing else around there and not many people to
witness their activities.

Parks Supervisor Riverblood advised that the Hermansons had been concerned with wildlife
preservation, although there is not a lot of wildlife in that area so they had integrated an area for
wildlife into that park plan. He advised that the future Sunfish Lake Park is a shining example of
where the priorities of the neighbors arid residents have become part of the design for the park.
He thought that they should definitely integrate a picnic area into that park area.

COMMISSION/STAFF INPUT

Civil Engineer Linton advised that the perennials had been installed on Sunwood Drive today
and are now all the way from Coburn's to Ramsey Boulevard. He advised that the trees have
been in now for a couple weeks.

Parks Supervisor Riverblood presented a slide show on the restoration of the warming house at
Central Park. He advised that it had previously been pretty dim inside the structure and
explained that they had salvaged the windows that are now in the building from a house that was
being demolished in another part of the City. He explained that the new windows help to provide
an opportunity for parents to stay within the warming house and watch their children skate on the
ice. He advised that they had also put insulation into the building, which would help with future
energy costs. He advised that they had also put a residential fireplace into the building and
elevated it to provide a prime seating area. He advised that the elevation and mass of the
fireplace provides additional atmosphere to the warming house. He explained that the stone used
for the area surrounding the fireplace was actually excess material from the City Hall.

Chairperson Johns thought that the building turned out beautifully and that the windows make a
great difference. She thought it was a great meeting space.

Parks Supervisor Riverblood advised that there are a few more improvements to be made to the
warming house before it is completed. He advised that the building would be used for the
upcoming fall elections.

Park and Recreation Commission/June 12, 2008
Page 9 of 11
