PC CASE # ' <br />CONSIDER AUTHORIZATION TO HIRE <br />A FIRE INSPECTOR <br />By: Givonna Reed Kone, Human Resources Manager <br />Background <br />The City's former Fire Marshal, Jerry Streich, submitted a letter of resignation effective July <br />2008. On, July 8, 2008 the Fire Marshal position was reclassified to Fire Inspector and <br />staff was authorized to conduct a recruitment process to fill the Fire Inspector position. <br />An internal recruitment process was conducted and staff received applications from three <br />firefighters. <br />Staff Recommendation <br />Staff is recommending that the Personnel Committee recommend Matt Kohner for the <br />Fire Inspector position. Mr. Kohner's background check and pre-employment physical <br />and drug screen results are satisfactory. With City Council approval; Mr. Kohner's start <br />date will be September 2, 2008 and his starting wage will be $26.33. per hour. <br />Mr. Kohner will be subject to a six-month probationary period and all other personnel <br />policies will apply normally. <br />Funding Source <br />This is an existing position and it is included in the 2008 General Fund Budget as <br />approved by the City Council in December 2007. By reclassifying this position from Fire. <br />Marshal to Fire Inspector, the City will save approximately $15,000 in salary for the <br />remainder of 2008 and approximately $12,000 in salary for 2009. (The 2008 savings <br />includes two months of salary savings because the position was vacant.) <br />Committee Action <br />Make a motion recommending that the City Council hire Matt Kohner as the <br />Fire Inspector at an hourly rate of $26.33, effective September 2, 2008.
