<br />Community Development Director Miller noted that St. Paul allows people to keep chickens on a <br />permit basis. <br /> <br />Mayor Gamec stated that he felt a permit process was a good idea because then the City would <br />know where they are. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strommen suggested that the number of chickens allowed be on a sliding scale <br />based on acreage. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig noted that chickens are sometimes a "seasonal" item and are butchered <br />and not kept year round. <br /> <br />Councilmember Dehen stated that he didn't think it was appropriate to have chickens on the very <br />small lots of Y<t acre or ~ acre. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig agreed that it wouldn't be appropriate for people to keep chickens on the <br />very small lots. <br /> <br />Community Development Director Miller asked if the Council wanted to allow hoofed animals. <br /> <br />There was a CONSENSUS of the Council to keep the requirements the same as they currently <br />are for hoofed animals. <br /> <br />Councilmember Olson asked about rabbits. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strommen suggested that rabbits fall under the same permit requirements as <br />chickens. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig stated that he wants to make sure the regulations don't prohibit kids from <br />having 4H projects. <br /> <br />There was a CONSENSUS that the City would not allow roosters. <br /> <br />Community Development Director Miller asked what the Council would like to do about <br />beekeeping. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strommen stated that she feels the City should allow it with some regulations. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig stated that he would like to learn more about bees, because he knows <br />many people are allergic to their stings. <br /> <br />Councilmember Olson suggested that Community Development Director Miller contact Bruce <br />Bacon, who used to be on staff at the City, because he raises bees. <br /> <br />Community Development Director Miller suggested that the Council consider a requirement of <br />at least 1 acre for beekeeping. <br /> <br />City Council Work Session /September 2,2008 <br />Page 7 of8 <br />
