CASTE # I 1
IRRIGATION FOR RIVERDALE PARK — 2008 PARKS CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT
By: Mark Riverblood, Parks Supervisor
Background:
The 2003 Parks Capital Improvements Program (GIP) identifies irrigation as a need for
Riverdale Park, As Council may recall, earlier this year, the Park and Recreation Commission
forwarded a work plan that requested this project be considered for construction in the fall of
2003, At their regular October meeting, the Commission recommended proceeding with this
project relative to the budget estimate below.
The impetus for this project is that during dry periods the turf quality declines substantially,
resulting in a park space that is unattractive and underutilized, In addition; the park has been the
subject of significant volunteer tree planting contributions, (with many of the park trees
negatively affected during droughty periods). The most recent tree planting was the 2008 Arbor
Day collaboration between the Environmental Policy Board and Village Bank of Ramsey,
Further, neighbors of the area have been watering trees for many years with garden hoses relative
to a concern for the trees.
Observations:
The 4 -acre Riverdale Park was dedicated to the city as part of the platting of the Rivenwick
single family home subdivision along the Mississippi River in the 1990's. The park's primary
purpose is to serve as a neighborhood resource for those residents south of Hwy's # 10 & # 169
near the future Mississippi West Regional Park, and Ramsey's boundary further to the east.
Since the initial construction of the park, many townhome units have been platted and are now
occupied to the west of Riverdale Park. The attached Logis map demonstrates the proximity of
the hundreds of families who will benefit from these improvements to the park.
Also attached are the CIP worksheet, and the schematic of the proposed irrigation project. Below
are the estimated construction costs of this project, as well as the annual anticipated operational
expenses.
Irrigation Detail
Irrigation, 12 -zone, 2 -wire system $33,000
Waterrnain connections, concrete pad, RPZ $9,000
Electric service (Connexus) $1,600
Meter socket and minor electrical $900
Contingency $500
Trenching, blacktop repair, restoration etc. by city forces N/C
Total $45,000
—361
