I.~ <br />pc CASE # ~ <br /> <br />CONSIDER AUTHORIZATION TO HIRE A <br />PART-TIME BUILDING MAINTENANCE WORKER <br /> <br />By: Givonna Reed Kone, Human Resources Manager <br /> <br />C Background <br /> <br />Since moving into the new Municipal Center in November 2006, the City has contracted with <br />two different cleaning services. Overall, the service~ provided have not met the City's <br />expectations or needs. In August 2008, staff proposed and was authorized to cancel the cleaning <br />contract. Authorization to begin the recruitment process for a 24 hrs/wk Building Maintenance <br />Worker was given on August 26,2008. Thirty-two applications were received and seven <br />applicants were interviewed. <br /> <br />Staff Recommendation <br /> <br />Staff is recommending that the Personnel Committee grant authorization to hire Steven Paquette <br />as the City's new part-time Building Maintenance Worker. The results of Mr. Paquette's <br />background check and pre-employment physical and drug screen are satisfactory. With City <br />Council approval, Mr. Paquette's start date will be October 29, 2008 and his starting wage will <br />be $15.22 per hour: Mr. Paquette will be subject to a six month probationary period and all <br />other personnel policies will apply normally. <br /> <br />Funding Source <br /> <br />The cleaning contract has been cancelled; therefore, the funds that would have been paid <br />to the cleaning contractor for November and December 2008 will be used to pay hourly <br />wages for the part-time Building Maintenance Worker in November and December 2008. <br />This will result in a General Fund savings of $2,600 for calendar year 2008. <br /> <br />Looking forward to 2009, cancelling the cleaning contract and hiring a part-time regular <br />Building Maintenance Worker at an annual cost of $23,000 (including applicable taxes, <br />benefits and insurance) will result in a General Fund savings of$16,000 in 2009. <br /> <br />Committee Action <br /> <br />Make a motion recommending that Steven Paquette be hired as a part-time Building Maintenance <br />Worker at an hourly rate of $15.22, effective October 29,2008.
