CASE #1
CONSIDER REQUEST FOR STOP SIGN AT
FLUORINE STREET AND 146TH AVENUE
By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer
Background:
On September 10, 2008 a petition was received by the City which was signed by 16 property
owners within the vicinity of the intersection of Fluorine Street and 146 Avenue requesting that
a Stop signed be placed on the west leg of this three legged intersection. The location of this
intersection is illustrated on the attached figure. A copy of the attached petition cites two reasons
for the sign. This intersection is one lot north of a trail entrance into Solstice Park which
increases pedestrian traffic, particularly that of children. The petition cites left turning vehicles
from 146 Avenue onto Fluorine Street often do not slow sufficiently. It should be noted that the
intersection angle of these two streets is greater than 90 degrees which could facilitate a faster
turning speed, The second reason cited in the petition is to deter northbound traffic from using
146 .Avenue and Fluorine Street in favor of Sunwood Drive for eastbound traffic,
Staff has reviewed the intersection and offers the following information as background in
considering this request.
• accident history - A review of the police department records dating back for a five year
period shows no reported accident at this intersection.
• Traffic - Traffic counts were taken on October , 2008 on all legs of this intersection.
The peak hour count .represents an average value of 10% of the total daily traffic volume.
The results of this traffic volume study are as follows:
Street
Fluorine Street
Fluorine Street
146th Avenue
,Intersection
Sight ,Distance — The sight line across the northeast corner of this intersection is
unobstructed, The sight distance across the southeast corner is slightly impaired due to
landscaping located on this corner.
Notification:
The petitioners have been notified of this issue being on this evening's agenda.
—98—
Daily
Peak
Leg
Trafftc
Hour
North
165
17
South
165
17
West
320
32
650
65
Sight ,Distance — The sight line across the northeast corner of this intersection is
unobstructed, The sight distance across the southeast corner is slightly impaired due to
landscaping located on this corner.
Notification:
The petitioners have been notified of this issue being on this evening's agenda.
—98—
