CASE # 3

PRELIMINARY PLANNING FOR 2009 ENVIRONMENTAL EXPO
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator

Background:

One charge of the Environmental Policy Board is to promote public outreach and education
regarding environmental issues. The Environmental Expo & Tree Sale provides a great
opportunity for the Board to reach out to the community and provide access to meaningful and
educational information. Planning for the 2009 Environmental Expo will be getting started in
earnest now and the following components will be considered as part of the planning effort for
the 2009 Environmental Expo:
. Exhibitors-includes identifying companies, agencies, organizations, etc that would be
appropriate to invite to the expo event. Staff will facilitate the invitations and registration
but would like input from the Board regarding potential exhibitors.
. Tree Sale-Staff has been working with two nurseries that have been involved with the
Tree Sale for many years. The intent will be to have a limited number of nurseries
participating, each with a particular niche or focus. A pre-order option will again be
available for residents.
. Seminars/Speakers-includes identifying relevant environmental topics and potential
speakers and/or presenters. Staff will facilitate invitations but would like input from the
Board on potential topics.
. Activities-includes identifying activities, games, etc that will attract and entertain
persons of all ages. Examples may include a petting zoo, face painting, inflatables,
puppet show etc.
. Advertising-includes creating awareness for and promoting the expo event through
flyers, the Ramsey Resident newsletter, spots on QCTV, the website etc.

EPB Action

Staff is interested in discussing the EPB's involvement in the planning of the expo event. Any
action taken will be based on discussion.

EPB: 1/5/09
