2009 Public Workshops
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator

Background:

CASE # 4

Staff has been working with Anoka Conservation District (ACD) staff to offer a couple of water
conservation related workshops in 2009. The first workshop will be held the evening of
Wednesday, May 13th and will focus on 'water-smart' landscaping. The goals of the water smart
landscaping workshop are:
. Inform homeowners, of practical ways to reduce outdoor water use
. Present methods to conserve and use rainwater more effectively
. Discuss ways to prevent pollution of water bodies from storm water runoff
. Teach participants how to construct a rain barrel

The second workshop will be held on the morning of Saturday, June 13 and includes both a
classroom component and a hands-on component that focus on rain gardens. This workshop will
focus on the following:
. Function and purpose of rain gardens
. Sizing and properly situating a rain garden
. Rain garden construction
. Planting and maintaining a rain garden
. Grant opportunities

There will be no cost to register for either workshop. City Staff will promote the workshops and
ACD staff will lead the workshops and provide appropriate handouts.

EPB Action

No action is necessary; this is for informational purposes only. However, there may be an
opportunity to partner with the ACD on future workshops. Therefore, the Board may want to
discuss/consider other topics for potential future workshops. .

EPB: 1/5/09
