<br />..~, . <br /> <br />Land Use Category Definitions <br /> <br />Communities vary widely in the ways that they define and monitor land use within their borders. To arrive <br />at an aggregate picture of land use across the seven-county region, a set of consistent definitions is neces- <br />sary. The following definitions represent a minimum data base to represent existing developed land uses in <br />the region. Communities that use different definitions should so indicate, as appropriate, on Worksheet A '. <br />If there are questions or problems with the definitions below, please call the Councilis GIS staff listed on <br />page 8.4. <br /> <br />Single-family <br /> <br />Multifamily <br /> <br />Rural estate <br /> <br />Commercial <br /> <br />Industrial <br /> <br />Mining <br /> <br />Public, semipublic <br /> <br />Airports <br /> <br />Parks and <br />recreation <br /> <br />Lots or parcels of five acres or less containing single-family detached housing, <br />including manufactured homes. <br /> <br />Lots or parcels containing multiple dwelling units such as duplexes, bungalows, <br />twin homes, town houses, quad homes and apartment complexes. <br /> <br />Lots or parcels of five acres or more, containing single-family, detached housing, not <br />used for commerctaVagricultural purposes. <br /> <br />Lots or parcels containing retail sales, services (including professional), hoteVmotels <br />and all recreational services that are predominantly privately owned and operated for <br />profit (for example, theaters, bowling alleys, and riding stables). Included are private <br />institutional uses (convalescent homes and rest homes in which medical or surgical <br />services are not a main function of the institution), but not hospitals. Golf courses <br />are c;lassified as Iparks and recreation.! <br /> <br />Lots or parcels containing the buildings and the associated and adjacent landscap- <br />ing, recreation facilities and parking for uses that include the following: horticultural <br />specialties (e.g., greenhouse), general contractors (building construction and all non <br />building construction), manufacturing of all kinds, goods movement facilities, com- <br />munications, utilities and wholesale trade. <br /> <br />Extraction of nonmetallic minerals (except fuels), quarrying sand and gravel. <br /> <br />Buildings and land adjacent to schools (public and private), hospitals, churches, <br />cemeteries, ice arenas and all facilities of local, state and federal governments, <br />including public convalescent homes, mental institutions and penal facilities main- <br />tained by any level of government. Include the entire boundaries. of existing schools, <br />parks and hospitals. <br /> <br />Airport sites and any restricted land or buffer area where development is prohibited. <br /> <br />. . <br />The entire boundaries of parks (local, regional and state), playgrounds (not includ <br />ingschool yards), zoos, gun clubs, golf courses and similar areas. <br /> <br />Local Planning Handbook May 1997 <br /> <br />9.9 <br />
