-164—
improvements for the tower, the infrastructure is currently in place to accept this new tower. It
was shown that the new tower could be incorporated into the existing system and that the overall
system would function well, including adequate pressure, fire flow availability, and account for
future demand needs.
The new tower is proposed to be an all steel hydropillar; similar to the existing tower #2 on
Sunwood Drive. It is staff's intention to standardize our towers, as it relates to appearance and
equipment, during the final design process. The hydropillar design will provide space for City
equipment storage in the base, facilities for telecommunication providers, and easier
maintenance and retrofits in the future.
If approved tonight, the proposed schedule has this item back in front of the City Council on two
more occasions; March 24, 2009 for acceptance of the plans and specifications and authorization
to bid, and April 28, 2009 for award of contract. It is anticipated that construction will begin in
May of 2009, and that construction will be completed and the tower on -line by September of
2010.
Funding:
The engineer's opinion of probable construction costs for the proposed water tower site is
$4,303,961, which will be funded solely through the water utility fund.
Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the City Council accept the preliminary design report, and authorize the
preparation of plans and specifications for water tower #3 in Elmcrest Park.
Attachments:
Preliminary Design Report
Reviewed By:
Public V • s D
CC:
