Case #3:

Preliminary Planning for 2009 Environmental Expo

Environmental Coordinator Anderson stated that the expo would fall under the charge of public
outreach and education for the Board. He wanted to determine the involvement level of the
Board in the planning process for the event. He reported that he had spoken with some of the
previous tree vendors to offer another presale type event again this year. He advised that the two
vendors working on the presale event would provide the planting materials and explained that
they were brought in so that they would be able to benefit from the presale. He stated that it
would also give the vendors an idea of what type of species and how high the demand would be
at the event. He thought that the speakers and presentations were a great addition to the event
last year, although they were not well attended. He advised that Staff would work on advertising
for the event with several channels of communication this year to try to draw in more residents.
He advised that he would be working with the local school to hopefully draw in some families.

Acting Chairperson Max thought that they should try to get the kids at that school involved in a
poster or poem contest.

Ex-Officio Member McDilda thought that would be a good idea and advised that he could
potentially help with that item.

Acting Chairperson Max commented that the winner's picture could be used as a logo or put
onto a button, something of that nature.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson thought that would be a great idea and hoped that one of
the Board Members wanted to take on that task.

Acting Chairperson Max and Ex-Officio Member McDilda volunteered to oversee the poster
contest involving Ramsey Elementary School.

Environmental Coordinator Anderson stated that he would also be open to receiving help with
the planning for the event from interested residents. He also thought that if the topics discussed
at the event were relevant to the community it might help to draw in more people.

Ex-Officio Member McDilda thought the key element would be in getting the word out. He
explained that the elementary school was a more prime location and was easy for people to see
that something was going on compared to the City Hall, which is tucked away from main routes.
He commented that some of the family-friendly events held in the past, such as the petting zoo
and inflatables, may have helped to draw families to the event.

Acting Chairperson Max stated that high school students have to do public service and thought
that they might be useful volunteers for face painting and similar activities.

Ex-Officio Member McDilda stated that the Master Naturalists could also help with some of the
event planning.

Councilmember McGlone commented that Waste Management has coloring books and similar
items available for events like this.

Environmental Policy Board / January 5, 2009
Page 6 of9
