Beginning at the east bridge will be a 10' foot wide bituminous path over 6" of recycled base
material. This trail winds it way 2,655' feet through the beautiful maple-basswood forest of King's
Island, past the large pond in the center created by the former gravel operation. Four of the 8
benches and half of the litter receptacles will be appropriately placed along the island trail.

At the west bank of the island, the trail will traverse gently up and above the 100-year floodplain
after crossing the second bridge. This is the location of one of the massive earthen dikes that will
be removed by this project - the other is downstream in this same island channel, and will be
removed separate from this construction process. The dikes were placed in the river channels in
the middle part of the last century for vehicle and mining access to the island. The purpose of the
dike removals is to restore ecological functioning of the stream channel and riparian ecosystems.
(Similar to the island complexes upstream in Elk River, these island side channels are valuable
smallmouth bass spawning habitat.)

04/03/2009
