<br />DRIVEWAY CULVERT POLICY <br /> <br />Purpose: <br /> <br />Significant areas of the City rely on roadside dit,ches to convey runoff to rivers, storm ditches, <br />lakes and ponds. Proper drainage of the roadway is essential for the longevity of the pavements <br />in which the public has a substantial investment. Individual driveways normally require culverts <br />to prevent the obstruction of the free flow of storm water within these ditch systems. This policy <br />is intended to outline the requirements and responsibilities for'the maintenance and repair of <br />private driveway culverts within the public right of way. <br /> <br />Installation requirement - A minimum of a 15 inch corrugated metal culvert including flared end <br />sections shall be required under every driveway constructed after the date of adoption of this <br />policy in locations where street drainage is carried by a ditch section. This shall include existing <br />driveways which are upgraded from dirt or gravel to hard pavement, and those which are <br />reconstructed through the removal of deteriorated pavement or regrading. <br /> <br />Prohibition of Removal - The removal of an existing culvert is prohibited and any property <br />owner who violates this policy shall be responsible for damage resulting from the blockage or <br />removal of a culvert. <br /> <br />Maintenance - It shall be the responsibility of the property owner to maintain the driveway <br />culvert in good condition. Should the culvert become plugged or collapsed, the street <br />superintendant may order its repair or replacement. <br /> <br />City to provide culvert atcost - As a service to the property owners, the public works department <br />shall furnish and deliver culvert materials for installation by the property owner at the cost of the <br />City. for the culvert materials. <br /> <br />14 <br />
