RELATED EXPERIENCE

BENSON PARK MASTER PLAN

NORTH MANKATO, MINNESOTA
Benson Park is a 69-acre park located at the newly developing edge of North Mankato,
Minnesota. In 2008 the City retained HKGi to prepare a Master Plan that blended their
desire for the park to remain a passive oriented destination with places for walking,
fishing, and informal play with the Parks and Green Spaces Committee's desire to create
a natural resource oriented park. HKGi worked closely with City staff and committee
representatives to create an engaging master plan for a natural resource park that focuses
on preserving natural habitats and teaching about native ecosystems. Pprk amenities,
such as a children's area for nature based play, a fishing pier, picnic shelter, an outdoor
classroom, sledding hill and new skating pond are grouped at the north end of the park
leaving the remainder of the park for habitat restoration initiatives. New oak savannah,
rolling prairie, woodland, and wetlands habitats are planned to be integrated with an
extensive network of interpretive trails for walking, nature study and bird watching.

HKGi
Park Design Services - Page 23
