CASE # 3

Invasive Species Education
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator

Background:

One item on the Board's 2010 proposed work plan is invasive species education and outreach.
During discussion of the 2010 work plan, the Board discussed approaching this topic in a similar
fashion to the water conservation tool box, through some form of a web page to be added to the
city's website.

Observations:

Components that Staff believes should be included in the web page include:
description/definition of invasive species, background info regarding why they are detrimental,
and then a listing of invasive species (with both common and scientific names) along with
descriptions, photos and possible control measures. The list of species could include trees,
shrubs and plants. Staff would suggest that, at a minimum, the following species be included:
. Buckthorn (Common & Glossy) . Spotted Knapweed
(Rhamnus cathartica andfrangula) (Centaurea maculosa)
. Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata) . Siberian Elm (Ulmus pumila)
. Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense) . Tartarian honey suckle
. Canary Reed Grass (Lonicera tartarica)
(Phalaris arundinacea) . Crown Vetch (Coronilla varia)
. Purple Loosestrife . Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia esula)
(Lythrum salicaria)

Other species that could be considered include Amur Maple, Narrow-Leaf Cattail and Smooth
Brome, all of which have invasive tendencies and were identified within Ramsey during the.
Natural Resources Inventory. Additionally, this may be an appropriate site to include
information about other concerning plants like poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) as well as
invasive pests and pathogens site such as Emerald Ash Borer, Gypsy Moth, Asian Longhorned
Beetle, Dutch Elm Disease, Oak Wilt, etc.

Staff will have a laptop and projector on hand for the meeting to preview existing info available
online through several different sites.

Recommendation:

The Board should be prepared to discuss components to include in the invasive species web page
as well as prioritize which species to focus on first.

EPB Action

Based on discussion.

EPB:2/1I10
