Major areas of
responsibilities include operational maintenance and development of the City's parks, buildings,
shelters, playgrounds, and trail systems. This includes turf and irrigation maintenance, athletic field
preparation, trail maintenance, park equipment maintenance and repair, and other seasonal activities
such as the ice skating rinks which served 3,058 visitors at Central Park during the last season and 2,980
visitors at the Ramsey Elementary School.
Ramsey's parks and trail system includes 565 acres of municipal parkland distributed into 19 separate
parks and over 30 miles of trails and sidewalks. Adding trail segments is an important planning task to
network the entire trail system in Ramsey. Some of the major accomplishments during the 2009
summer season included:
• Sunfish Lake Park completion
• Skate Park at Alpine Park
• Community garden space near Water Tower No.2
• Off Leash area at Alpine Park
Utilities
The Utilities staff includes a Utilities Supervisor and two Public Works Maintenance Workers. Seasonal
employees are also utilized during high demand times of the year. Major areas of responsibilities include
operational maintenance of the City's water and sanitary sewer utilities. This includes the day to day
chemical feed testing and documentation required to comply with state regulations, semiannual
flushing of the water utility, lift station maintenance, and annual jetting of sanitary sewer system.
Ramsey's water utility includes eight (8) deep water wells, four (4) pump houses, over 87 miles of water
main, two (2) water towers, over 1000 fire hydrants, and over 1,100 valves. The sanitary sewer utility
includes about 48 miles of sewer main and seven (7) lift stations. These systems are controlled
automatically by a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA).
In 2008, the Utilities division saw the implementation of the Water Meter Replacement program. This
program will replace more than 750 water meter or registers per year and ensure accurate billing. The
new meter registers are equipped with radio telemetry to decrease meter reading time and they also
make it possible to determine continuous leaks in houses or businesses. During 2009, the second year of
the 5 year implementation of this program, Staff has continued changing meters to radios read. As of
1/21/10, there were 1,781 meters replaced in -house with radio read technology.
During 2009, more than 640 million gallons of water were pumped from the City's eight (8) municipal
wells, which is a slight increase from the 627 million gallons pumped in 2008. Another accomplishment
in the Utilities Division was training and full utilization of the jetter /vac truck. During 2009, the Utilities
Division was able to make it through the entire sewer collection system for the first time. This compares
to the 1/8 of the system that was contracted for the previous year.
City of Ramsey Page 2009 Annual Report
18
