I live in the neighborhood between the Rum River Golf Course and is connected to the Silver Oaks neighborhood. I have
a concern about the access to Hwy. 47 for the property (16261 St. Francis Blvd) located between the Centex
Homes/Silver Oaks area and Morton's Nursery on Hwy 47. There hasn't been an issue over the years with the driveway
to the house there because there was not much activity at that house, but now someone seems to be living there on
and off. A few years ago the siding was replaced.
Driving north from the Silver Oaks addition on Hwy. 47, you don't know there is a driveway there until you finish the
turn on the curve and it's right there, so it's a hidden driveway from the south, especially going 45 - 55 miles per hour.
There are many times where the traffic driving south there creeps across the center fine starting at that driveway to go
around the curve. This is a dangerous situation for drivers going north with the blind driveway at the end of the curve in
the summer and more so in the winter with slippery roads. That driveway has still not been "plowed out" very well, so
to get traction and go south from there is very dangerous in the winter because of the curve and from I can observe
would also be tough to go south from that driveway in the summer, since that driveway is hidden.
This winter someone has been living there. I have observed the following:
A car "stuck" at the end of the driveway trying to get on Hwy. 47 right after a snowstorm. I was driving north
and the car surprised me at the end of the driveway that I think was trying to get onto Hwy. 47.
A car facing west flipped upside down on that driveway or close to it (in November before there was much
snow).
A car in the ditch (which is very narrow) near that driveway.
Is it possible to get the driveway to this house closed to Hwy. 47 and a new access created to connect to the Silver Oaks
neighborhood? That's what happened with the red/now green house across from the Boy Scout camp several years
ago. Their access to Hwy. 47 was removed and they drive to their house by going into the Orrin Thompson
development to get to that house now.
I have talked with my neighbors about this driveway and one said she was driving north there with a car in the ditch near
that driveway on the east side, plus a car driving south was crossing the centerline. If the driveway is moved, can some
of the landscaping be changed/removed on that curve to create a true ditch to allow room for ashoulder/lane on the
east side of Hwy. 47, especially with the tendency for southbound drivers to cross the centerline?
I hope the Silver Oaks neighborhood's future cul-de-sac/road to the north allows for someday connecting that house
and maybe the Mortons Nursery property, so both accesses to Hwy. 47 are removed.
Mary Neumann
612-532-6357
