• LRRWMO Meeting Minutes
May 15, 1997
Page 3
Placed on June 19,1997, agenda.
Minnesota Community Education Association (MCEA -Request for Partici ap tion
Jankowski read the letter from MCEA inviting the LRRWMO to be a partner in the Watershed
Resources Youth Stewardship Project. He explained they are requesting assistance to help them
obtain a grant from the Met Council. He noted projects may include water level monitoring,
stenciling storm sewer outlets, etc. Jankowski asked if members would like to participate in this
program to better identify the water quality of the LRRWMO basin. He noted this activity will also
qualify towards the educational requirement of the LRRWMO.
Schultz questioned how this data will assist the LRRWMO and how it will be verified for accuracy.
Jankowski noted the Plan update identifies a number of deficiencies, such as the need for more water
quality data. Ferguson pointed out this program is for students in grades 4-8.
Schultz explained the community service activity required by high school students as part of their
• graduation and suggested that may be a better option, if supervision is provided to those students.
He questioned whether the LRRWMO should consider a financial contribution towards a School
District project.
Jankowski agreed that since this program is for younger students, it may not be appropriate for water
quality monitoring. However, it maybe appropriate to fulfill the educational requirement.
Ferguson stated a company is spearheading this effort and before he would consider support, he
would like to talk with other watersheds that have participated in such a program to get their input.
s
Weaver stated from a policy standpoint, any entity that wants a financial contribution should be
carefully researched and he would appreciate the opportunity for further review. He noted the School
District #11 community education has a $1~;866'budget.
i2 ~t~llaaw
Jankowski stated if legitimate, he is supportive of the concept since it fits into what the LRRWMO
should be doing with public involvement and education. However, he agreed with the need to
conduct more investigation into this request.
Ferguson and Schultz indicated they may feel more comfortable in dealing duectly with a local school
group.
Consensus reached to table this request to the June 19,1997, meeting to allow time for further
research and to direct the Administrative Secretary to send MCEA and participating
watersheds a letter requesting more information.
