Max. <br />500 3,000 500 3,000 <br />Air Voids in Mix (8)(2) 3 5 3 6(3) <br />a) Test procedures are on file in the Department of <br />Transportation Materials Engineering Laboratory <br />in St. Paul. <br />b) To the extent permitted by these specifications, <br />the Department intends to design the wearing and <br />non-wearing course mixtures with 4 and 5 percent <br />air voids, respectively. <br />(3) Asphalt cement content, as determined by the trial <br />mix test procedures and the above criteria, shall not <br />exceed 6.8 percent nor be less than 5.5 percent for <br />wearing course mixtures and shall not exceed 5.5 <br />percent nor be less than 4.5 percent for non-wearing <br />course mixtures. <br />In the event that 100 percent taconite tailings are <br />supplied, the recommended asphalt content shall be <br />7.5 and 5.5 for the wearing and non-wearing course <br />mixture, respectively, and the air void limits <br />indicated above will not apply. <br />All asphalt contents are based on total weight of <br />mixture. <br />(4) The Contractor may elect to use a mixture resulting <br />in an asphalt content that exceeds the maximum limits <br />indicated above, but the Contract Agency will deduct <br />the excess design asphalt from the pay quantity for <br />bituminous material for mixture based on the <br />difference between the maximum limit and the higher <br />job-mix asphalt content. The difference will be <br />deducted in all cases, even if the daily average of <br />the bituminous material incorporated into the mixture <br />is below .the maximum limit established for the <br />respective bituminous course and aggregate type (as <br />determined by tank stickingsr meter readings or <br />obsecvation of batch weights).
