I
RUNWAY ORIENTATION REVIEW
r A. Utilizing the Existing Landing Strip Orientation
For the purpose of this site study, the primary location and orien-
t tation for the proposed airport runway is that of the existing
northwest /southeast sod landing strip as graphically displayed on
exhibits B and C. This runway alignment is referred to as Runway 16 -34
due to the magnetic azimuth or compass reading as an aircraft lines up
with the runway centerline on its landing approach or take -off.
The Burlington Northern Railroad mainline tracks, located immediately
south of the existing landing strip, are the controlling factor in the
placement of the proposed runway along the existing alignment. The
runway approach surface must maintain, at least, a 23 feet clearance
above the top of the rails. The critical distance between the runway
' primary surface and the railroad tracks, in this case, is along the
western edge of the south approach surface (or clear zone) where
approximately 900 feet of horizontal separation are required to maintain
the 23 foot vertical separation. As measured along the runway centerline
extended, the south edge of the primary surface must be approximately
1250' north of the northernmost rail.
In extending the 3700' primary surface northwesterly along the existing
alignment to provide for a 3300' runway, the centerline of newly constructed
I
15
