2. Zoning - Airport and Ground - In addition to the Clear Zone
requirement, ground and air zoning is a requirement beyond the
runway. This zoning is necessary to insure control of the physical
changes to the land and air space on each end of the runway a distance
equal to the runway length. In the subject case the zoning would cover
3700 feet beyond each end of the runway or for a total distance of
11,100 linear feet for the site.
The zoning overlaps the Clear Zone. The zoning requirements are part
of the rules and regulations of the Mn/DOT, Division of Aeronautics
Aero 9 and 10.
The ground zones are designated as A, B and C. A and B zones lie in
the approach safety area and Zone C is a limited zoning area for a
radius of 6000 linear feet around the airport. If desired or mandated
by local zoning, Zone C can. be a limited use area.
Zone A extends 2/3 the length of the runway beyond each end of the
runway, and Zone B extends 1/3 of the length of the runway beyond
each end of Zone A. Each zone width parallels the Clear Zone or at
the ratio of 20/3 on each extension. See exhibits B through D for
locations of the designated zones.
The following are, section references from the Model Zoning Ordinance
for Minnesota Airports. The references indicate the limitations for
each zone indicated above.
-6-
