In this case the runway must be at least 3700 feet long including 200
foot thresholds on each end. The Clear Zone must extend 2000 L.F.
out from the ends of the runway at an expanding horizontal slope of
20/3. The primary surface area that encompasses the runway, must be
500 feet wide for length of the runway.
At each end point of the runway the approach surface will extend out
at a rate of 20/3 until at the end of the clear zone its width is
1100 feet.
The approach slope or path necessary for landing is at a ratio of
40:1 from the end of each runway extended outward and upward.
Therefore, the runway and Clear Zones must have a minimum of 7700
linear feet to meet the requirements, a width of 1100 feet at the
end of each Clear Zone and a width of 500 feet at the runway.
Obstructions are also a necessary consideration. There can be no
obstruction permanent or otherwise in the primary zone. The Clear
Zone must have no obstruction within it that extends above the 40:1
approach slope. -The Clear Zone must also be devoid of active use,
i. e. residences or activities that may in any way jeopardize the
safe approach of any aircraft.
In the case of this facility, the railroad and power lines on the south
approach determine the location of the south end of the runway. A
railroad must be cleared by 17 feet as does any county road. Higher
clearance limits are set for four land highways. Power lines must be
buried within the Clear Zone.
-5-
