13. FLYING CLOUD AIRPORT
Flying Cloud Airport, aMAC-owned airport located approximately 10 nautical miles
southwest of Minneapolis-St, Paul International, is designated as a minor airport in the
reliever system. The airport is classified as a General Utility Stage I airport in the NPIAS.
Due to traffic volumes and aircraft types, however, Flying Cloud reportedly operates as a
Stage A facility. FaWbit V 7 illustrates the existing airport layout and recommended system
improvements for the airport.
(1) Operational Capacity
Flying Cloud Airport is currently operating at more than 50 percent of its
available airfield capacity (estimated at 355,000 annual operations). By the end of
the planning period, We airport will surpass 80 percent of its available operational
capacity. Capaaty enhancement is unlikely due to surrounding land envelope
constraints. There is limited opportunity to significantly improve Flying Cloud's
operational capacity due to limited undeveloped property adjacent to the airport.
(2) Landside Facilities
Aircraft storage at Flying Cloud consisu of 182,800 squaze feet of conventional
hangar space, 211 T-hangaz stalls, and approximately 154 tie-downs. These facilities
are currently adequate, but 23 additional T-hangaz stalls and 21 tie-downs will be
required by the end of the planning period to accommodate projected based aircraft
levels. The existing land envelope should be adequate to accommodate planned
improvements at the airport.
Using general planning standazds, the existing 16,000 squaze feet of
terminal/administration azea, 370 automobile parking spaces, and the 23,000 square
• feet of itinerant ramp should be adequate for the planning period.
V-73
